A one day course for professionals working with substance and alcohol misuse, focussing on the dynamics in families and couples.
The course aims
- Explore how the substance or alcohol influences the dynamic of the couple and family relationships
- Consider the function of the substance in terms of unmet needs in the existing relationship
- Increase skills to explore the function of the substance misuse
- Consider the couple's interaction and collusive patterns of relating using psychodynamic principles
- Enhance skills and understanding of multi-agency and interdisciplinary working to provide support to couples as they engage in treatment services.
Components and structure
The course consists of three components:
- Theoretical component focussing on developmental factors that influence relationships leading to a failure in adaptive capacities resulting in crisis
- Case discussion - professionals are invited to bring their own case work and apply theory to clinical practice

Reflective practice - an opportunity to explore the impact of the work on organisational/service dynamics offering psychological support to workers
Time Commitment
The course can be delivered as a full day or a series of half days. Organisations can select from aspects of the course content to suit their training needs.
